ICON model - World, Geopotential height at 500hPa
This 500 hPa geopotential height (Z500) map depicts the altitude at which the atmospheric pressure is 500 hPa. It’s a fundamental parameter for understanding large-scale weather patterns and trough/ridge formations.
Higher geopotential heights usually correspond to ridges (fair weather), while lower heights indicate troughs (unstable weather). Meteorologists use Z500 maps for mid‐tropospheric analysis and medium-range forecasting.
These charts are similar to those in WXCharts, Pivotal Weather, Wetterzentrale, and Tropical Bids.
